Creating Leaders in Grass-based Agriculture

NNYFP members are constantly looking for cutting edge knowledge in grass based farming. Many members take the knowledge that they gain at these conferences and put it into practice on their own farms. Then, keeping with the mission of the group, they pass that knowledge onto new farmers, so the whole community can benefit from one members conference attendance. Below is a list of conferences that NNYFP members have attended.

2005 Stockman Grassfarmer No Risk Ranching School, Tulsa OK

Missouri grazier, Greg Judy, went from the brink of bankruptcy to easily paying off his home and farm’s mortgage in just two years with custom grazing. Low cost land leasing allows you to expand with little to no capital and with no risk from future price drops. At this school Greg will show you how to get started, how to develop a farm with zero tractor input, how to find cattle owners and how much to charge, how to clear brush with hogs, hair sheep and cattle, how to use custom grazing to finance your way into high value grassfed meat production.

2006 Harrier Fields Farm and Bakewell Reproductive Center Artificial Insemination Training, NY

Ridge Shinn and Gearld Fry led the workshop. Workshop included facts of AI, equipment and preparation steps. Attendees learned about the internal reproductive organs of the cow, practiced artificial insemination and then artificially inseminated live cows.

2006 Bakewell Reproductive Center, Doug Gunnink Grass-Fed Beef Seminar

Conference topics include: how to treat and balance soil/plans with amendments, how to measure progress with Brix meter and pH meter,how to produce organic 100% grass-fed beef, how to choose genetics to optimize your grass.

2006 Draft Horse Workshop, Paul Smiths, NY

Draft horses can still be viable tools for the forestry industry. This three-day workshop focused on the benefits of using equine labor in logging operations.

This training weekend covered: preserving the harvest, canning and beyond; making cheese, making soap, making money; making and selling healing herbal products, saving seed, saving money, saving our future.

2006 100% Grass Fed Dairy Conference, Harrisburg PA

Conference topics included: the secrets of seasonal milk production; small acreages earn big returns from no-grain dairying, award winning cheese starts with 100% grassfed milk, and dual purpose dairy cattle.

Workshop hosted by Nuestras Raices founded in 1992. Nuestras Raices is a grassroots organization that promotes economic, human and community development in Holyoke, Massachusetts, through projects relating to food, agriculture and the environment.
